The Gitrog Monster is a Golgari commander from Shadows over Innistrad and one of the most feared engines in the format. He lets you play an additional land each turn and draws a card whenever a land hits your graveyard — from sacrifice, from discard, from mill, from anything. Pair that with Dakmor Salvage and a single discard outlet and the frog generates an infinite loop that draws your entire deck, creates infinite mana, and wins the game from a single activated ability before opponents can respond.

The deck operates on two levels simultaneously: a fair lands-matter engine that generates enormous value from every land entering and leaving the battlefield, and a degenerate combo finish that assembles from pieces innocent enough to slip past early disruption. Opponents who try to interact with the fair game find the combo assembling behind it. Opponents who go after the combo find the fair engine generating so much advantage they can't keep up regardless. The Gitrog Monster doesn't have a weak game — it just has two different ways to win and the patience to use whichever one opponents leave open.
