Hazel of the Rootbloom is a Golgari commander from Wilds of Eldraine built around the most flavorful artifact synergy the color combination has produced in years. Whenever you sacrifice a Food token, you create a 1/1 black Rat creature token — converting life gain artifacts directly into board presence. And whenever a creature you control dies, you create a Food token, feeding the cycle back into itself. Sacrifice a Food, get a Rat. Rat dies, get a Food. The loop generates value from both ends simultaneously with minimal external input required.
The deck is constructed to accelerate that self-sustaining cycle: Food generators that flood the engine with fuel, sacrifice outlets that convert Rats back into Foods on demand, and enough aristocrats payoffs to drain opponents while the loop runs. The longer the game goes and the more the cycle has churned, the wider the Rat army becomes — and the more life opponents have quietly lost to the drain effects quietly accumulating in the background.
