Ghave, Guru of Spores is an Abzan commander from Commander 2011 and one of the most degenerate combo engines the format has ever produced. His two activated abilities form a self-sustaining loop with any effect that generates mana from dying creatures or entering creatures: sacrifice a Saproling to Ghave for a counter, use the mana from that death to pay for Ghave's other ability, create a new Saproling, repeat infinitely. The loop generates infinite Saprolings, infinite death triggers, infinite enters-the-battlefield triggers, and infinite counters — all from a single external mana producer and Ghave himself.
The deck is built around assembling that loop as consistently as possible: mana producers that trigger on creature death or entry, aristocrats payoffs that drain infinite life from the infinite Saproling generation, and enough tutors and card draw to find the combo pieces through any amount of disruption. Outside the infinite line Ghave functions as a standalone counter manipulation and token generation engine — putting counters on the right creatures, removing them at the right time, and generating enough Saprolings to close games through pure attrition when the combo isn't available.
