In a deck full of creatures that die repeatedly and profitably, that choice becomes impossible to navigate correctly — pay the life and fall behind on life total, or let the creature come back and face it again next turn. Either way Athreos wins the exchange.

The deck is built around creatures that want to die repeatedly: cheap sacrifice fodder with powerful death triggers, aristocrats payoffs that drain life every time something hits the graveyard, and enough sacrifice outlets to ensure the death triggers fire on your terms rather than opponents'. The life payment pressure compounds with every creature that dies — opponents bleeding three life per creature returned eventually can't afford to stop the recursion at all, and the engine runs completely uncontested from that point forward.
