Varina, Lich Queen is the definitive Esper Zombie tribal commander from Commander 2018. Whenever you attack with one or more Zombies, you draw that many cards and then discard that many cards — filling your graveyard with fuel while keeping your hand loaded with threats. Then each opponent loses one life and you gain one life for each card discarded this way. Every combat step draws, discards, drains, and heals simultaneously without spending a single mana. In a deck full of Zombies, that trigger fires at maximum power every single attack.

The deck runs the densest Zombie package Esper can offer: cheap recursive Zombies that replace themselves when destroyed, lords that turn the horde into a lethal force, and enough discard synergies to make every card cycled through Varina's ability count twice. The graveyard fills fast, the drain accumulates faster, and by mid-game the Zombie army is too wide, too resilient, and too well-resourced for opponents to contain. The Lich Queen doesn't just command the dead — she makes them profitable.
