Szarel is a Jund commander built around lands from the graveyard, sacrifice synergy, and +1/+1 counters. You may play lands from your graveyard, which already makes fetch lands, self-mill, and sacrifice effects much stronger. Then, whenever you sacrifice another nontoken permanent during your turn, you put a number of +1/+1 counters equal to Szarel’s power on up to one other target creature. That means every cracked land, sacrificed artifact, or value permanent can help grow one of your threats into a real finisher. Official rulings also note that Szarel does not change when you are allowed to play those lands from your graveyard, so the deck still rewards proper timing and clean sequencing.
This deck is built around Jund lands-and-sacrifice synergy: lands you want to replay, permanents that are worth sacrificing for value, and payoff creatures that turn Szarel’s counter trigger into constant pressure.
