Syr Vondam is an Orzhov commander built around sacrifice, blink, and steady counter growth. Whenever another creature you control dies or is put into exile from the battlefield, Syr Vondam gets a +1/+1 counter and you gain 1 life. That means sacrifice outlets, blink effects, and creatures that naturally leave the battlefield all help grow your commander while keeping your life total moving up. When Syr Vondam dies or is put into exile with power 4 or greater, you also get to destroy up to one target nonland permanent, turning all that setup into a real payoff. Scryfall’s rules notes also clarify that the first trigger specifically cares about creatures you control leaving the battlefield, including being exiled from play.
