Kess, Dissident Mage is a Grixis commander from Commander 2017 built around the most reliable graveyard spellcasting engine the format has ever produced. Once per turn, you may cast an instant or sorcery from your graveyard — and if that spell would be put into the graveyard this turn, it gets exiled instead. The graveyard functions as a second hand of the best spells already cast this game: every removal spell that solved a problem gets cast again on the next relevant threat, every draw spell that refueled last turn refuels again this turn, every combo piece that was countered comes back for a second attempt.
The deck is built around filling the graveyard with the most impactful instants and sorceries worth recasting: self-mill and looting effects that stock the graveyard with options beyond what normal gameplay discards, high-value spells that justify the single daily recast Kess provides, and enough card draw to ensure the graveyard stays stocked with relevant options every single turn. The dissident mage doesn't run out of answers — she runs out of things worth answering, which in a well-built Grixis deck takes considerably longer than opponents have resources to wait for.
