Gargos, Vicious Watcher is a mono-green commander from Core Set 2020 built around the most explosive Hydra tribal engine in the format. He reduces the cost of every Hydra spell you cast by four mana — turning expensive X-cost Hydras into early game threats that arrive with enormous counter totals far ahead of schedule. And whenever a creature or spell targets Gargos, he fights any creature you choose — turning every removal spell aimed at him into a free murder of whatever the most threatening creature on the table happens to be.
The deck is a full Hydra tribal construction built to maximize the cost reduction: massive Hydras that normally require enormous mana investments arriving on turns three and four with counters already stacked, proliferate effects that amplify those counters beyond their starting value, and enough mana doublers to fund X costs so large that the Hydras arrive as genuine one-shot threats the turn they land. Opponents removing Gargos watch him fight their best creature on the way out. Opponents leaving him alone watch the Hydras arrive faster and larger than any mono-green deck has the right to deploy.
